What is web site?

Website

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A website (or "web site") is a collection of related web pages, images, videos or other digital assets that are hosted on one web server, usually accessible via the Internet.

A web page is a document, typically written in (X)HTML, that is almost always accessible via HTTP, a protocol that transfers information from the web server to display in the user's web browser.

All publicly accessible websites are seen collectively as constituting the "World Wide Web".

The pages of a website can usually be accessed from a common root URL called the homepage, and usually reside on the same physical server. The URLs of the pages organize them into a hierarchy, although the hyperlinks between them control how the reader perceives the overall structure and how the traffic flows between the different parts of the site.

Some websites require a subscription to access some or all of their content. Examples of subscription sites include many business sites, parts of many news sites, academic journal sites, gaming sites, message boards, Web-based e-mail, services, social networking websites, and sites providing real-time stock market data. Because they require authentication to view the content they are technically an Intranet site.

Measuring web traffic

web traffic graph

Measuring web traffic

Web traffic is measured to see the popularity of web sites and individual pages or sections within a site.

Web traffic can be analysed by viewing the traffic statistics found in the web server log file, an automatically-generated list of all the pages served. A hit is generated when any file is served. The page itself is considered a file, but images are also files, thus a page with 5 images could generate 6 hits (the 5 images and the page itself). A page view is generated when a visitor requests any page within the web site – a visitor will always generate at least one page view (the main page) but could generate many more.

Tracking applications external to the web site can record traffic by inserting a small piece of HTML code in every page of the web site. Web traffic is also sometimes measured by packet sniffing and thus gaining random samples of traffic data from which to extrapolate information about web traffic as a whole across total Internet usage.

The following types of information are often collated when monitoring web traffic:

  • The number of visitors.
  • The average number of page views per visitor – a high number would indicate that the average visitors go deep inside the site, possibly because they like it or find it useful.
  • Average visit duration – the total length of a user's visit. As a rule the more time they spend the more they're interested in your company and are more prone to contact.
  • Average page duration – how long a page is viewed for. The more pages viewed, the better it is for your company.
  • Domain classes – all levels of the IP Addressing information required to deliver Webpages and content.
  • Busy times – the most popular viewing time of the site would show when would be the best time to do promotional campaigns and when would be the most ideal to perform maintenance
  • Most requested pages – the most popular pages
  • Most requested entry pages – the entry page is the first page viewed by a visitor and shows which are the pages most attracting visitors
  • Most requested exit pages – the most requested exit pages could help find bad pages, broken links or the exit pages may have a popular external link
  • Top paths – a path is the sequence of pages viewed by visitors from entry to exit, with the top paths identifying the way most customers go through the site
  • Referrers; The host can track the (apparent) source of the links and determine which sites are generating the most traffic for a particular page.

Web sites like Alexa Internet produce traffic rankings and statistics based on those people who access the sites while using the Alexa toolbar. The difficulty with this is that it's not looking at the complete traffic picture for a site. Large sites usually hire the services of companies like Nielsen NetRatings [1], but their reports are available only by subscription.

What is the triffic in web?

Web traffic is the amount of data sent and received by visitors to a web site.

It is a large portion of Internet traffic. This is determined by the number of visitors and the number of pages they visit. Sites monitor the incoming and outgoing traffic to see which parts or pages of their site are popular and if there are any apparent trends, such as one specific page being viewed mostly by people in a particular country. There are many ways to monitor this traffic and the gathered data is used to help structure sites, highlight security problems or indicate a potential lack of bandwidth — not all web traffic is welcome.

Some companies offer advertising schemes that, in return for increased web traffic (visitors), pay for screen space on the site. Sites also often aim to increase their web traffic through inclusion on search engines and through Search engine optimization.

Obama crackdown on tax loopholes

President Barack Obama has proposed outlawing offshore tax-avoidance techniques in a move that could hit US corporations with overseas divisions.

His proposals would axe some tax deductions for firms that earn profits in countries with low tax rates.

His plan envisages 800 extra federal agents to police the laws, and may reap $210bn (£140bn) in tax over the decade.

The president said he wanted to "make it easier" for US companies to create jobs at home.

'Corporate loopholes'

He wants to close tax provisions that allow firms to put off paying taxes on profits made overseas as long as those earnings are invested back into the overseas subsidiaries.

"The steps I am announcing today will help us deal with some of the more egregious examples of what is wrong with our tax code," he said at a joint announcement with Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner.

While "most Americans meet their responsibilities" with regard to tax, he said there were others shirking theirs.

He now needs congressional approval for the changes, which some business leaders oppose, before they could come into effect in 2011.

The president said his proposals would fix a tax code "full of corporate loopholes " which encourage US companies to send jobs overseas.

'Balance'

His administration wants to prohibit American firms from taking deductions on the expenses for their overseas operations, until after they have booked their profits in the US.

However, expenses on research and experimentation would be exempt.

In addition, at present US firms are allowed to claim a credit against their American taxes for foreign taxes paid.

But the Obama administration wants to end this practice as it says some firms take advantage of this by artificially increasing the amount of taxes they owe.

And the administration also wants to restrict the strategy that allows US-based multinational firms to shift profits into low-tax jurisdictions.

To prevent this it would require some foreign subsidiaries to be considered as separate corporations for US tax purposes.

The president also called for more transparency in bank accounts held by US citizens in tax havens such as the Cayman Islands.

It is proposed that reporting requirements for overseas investments are tightened and that tougher penalties are introduced for those who fail to report foreign accounts.

US Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner has said the package of proposals "would bring balance to our tax code".

But Drew Lyon, a tax expert at PriceWaterhouse Coopers, said: "It's really hitting most Fortune 100 companies that depend to a great deal on growth of foreign markets for growing their total earnings."

Fiat could buy Vauxhall and Opel

Italian carmaker Fiat is in talks about buying the European business of General Motors (GM) - which includes the UK's Vauxhall and Germany's Opel.

Fiat is already trying to take over some of Chrysler, the US carmaker that has applied for bankruptcy protection.

And it said it was considering merging its carmaking business with those of Chrysler and GM Europe.

Saab is also part of GM Europe, but may not be part of the discussions as it is being reorganised under Swedish law.

Vauxhall employs about 5,000 people in the UK while Opel employs nearly 26,000 in Germany.

In a statement, GM Europe confirmed that it was, "in talks with several possible investors" and added that, "we see good and realistic interest of some of these possible investors".

But it declined to name any of the possible investors and said it did not want to "speculate about the content of the talks between the German government and the Fiat management".

'Ideal partner'

Fiat chairman Luca Cordero di Montezemolo said Opel would be an "ideal partner" and that a takeover was an "extraordinary opportunity".

GM faces potential bankruptcy in the US and has until 1 June to restructure.

Opel has said it needs 3.3bn euros (£2.9bn; $4.3bn) to get through the economic crisis, but the German government has encouraged it to find an investor.

It has said it does not intend offering Opel a bail-out, but that it would offer investors state support.

Mr de Montezemolo told Italy's Corriere della Sera newspaper on Sunday that a Fiat takeover of Opel would create "a very strong group".

Group chief executive Sergio Marchionne will meet the German economy and foreign ministers and the head of the Opel works council on Monday to assess the viability of a deal.

But there has been some doubt about whether Fiat could cope with such growth.

"They're going to be a global powerhouse, I guess. Who would have thought?" said Erich Merkle, an independent auto industry analyst in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

"It'll make them a very large automaker, but we've seen that large isn't necessarily indicative of success."

Five years ago, GM paid $2bn to avoid having to take up an option to buy Fiat's carmaking business.

GM challenge

In an interview with the Financial Times, Mr Marchionne said that buying Opel would be a "marriage made in heaven".

However Canadian car parts maker Magna International has also put forward what the German government has called a "rough concept for a commitment with Opel".

German Economy Minister Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg said that any investor would have to present a plan that kept Opel plants open in order to secure government support.

Last week General Motors (GM) said it was to cut 21,000 US jobs in 2009 and phase out its Pontiac brand, as it aims to meet the deadline set by the US government to overhaul its business and show that it is viable.

It must complete its restructuring by then to gain the government loans it needs to avoid bankruptcy protection.

Like US rivals Ford and Chrysler, GM has seen sales fall sharply in its core home market in recent years, a decline that has intensified as the recession has continued.
